Oracle Discoverer Version Messup

Recently, we experienced a weird problem on using oracle discoverer.

Situation: Discoverer Client at version 4.1.37
Discoverer Administraion at version 9.0.4

Problem: Business Area changed on discoverer administration side will not applied in client side.

Solution:

1. Re-install Discoverer Administration Edition 4.1.37
2. Create a new Oracle account with SELECT on DDEF2000 tables
3. Log into the 4.1.37 Admin tool using the new account and create a new EUL
4. Reconnect as owner of the EUL and import the DDEF2000_DIST business area
5. Check the course level to make sure it is varchar
6. Give users’ access to the new EUL and the new business area
7. Get user to log on and use Tools/Options/EUL to set his EUL to the new EUL
8. Reconnect user and open a workbook to verify that his issues are fixed.

Note: It’s unbelivable that same software only with different version acts totally differently. There must be some significant changes on new version of oracle administration side. Also, experienced that new version didn’t accept importing of business area which is exported in version 4.1.37.

Database Preparation for WebCT Campus Edition 6.0

Oracle Installation Guide for WebCT Campus Edition 6.0

Pre-request:

OS Platform: Sun Solaris 9 64 bit
Oracle Version: Oracle 9.2.0.7 64 bit Enterprise Edition

Circumstance:

We have oracle on version 9.2.0.6 both on development and production environment. Also a production standby database which resides in development environment forces us to upgrade to version 9.2.0.7. This upgrade will impact both of development and production database. It’s not good for us, not only the significant downtime of production database, but unexpected issues.
Another issue we are facing is that we have no clean physical server to install standalone database for WebCT. We must to implement that database in our development server complying with other existing databases. That means, the all default configuration, especially on the file location, need to be changed significantly.

Customized Steps for installation:

OS Platform: Sun Solaris 9 64 bit
Oracle Version: Oracle 9.2.0.6 64 bit Enterprise Edition

Step 1: change template file webct_solaris.dbt and installWebCTDatabase.sh
Step 2: Use XLiveCD to telnet target installation machine (running DBCA requires X-
Server installed in target machine, XLiveCD is good replacement when you
install from client desktop)
Step 3: run sh ./installWebCTDatabase.sh WEBCT WEBCT
Step 4: preparation and installation of statspack and plustrace by following instruction

Notes:

1. Directory /oradata/admin/ should be there because the DBCA utility will automatically create logs there
2. the third parameter is removed because the whole directories/sub-directories were all created previously.
3. Also, the parameter db_name in template file webct_solaris.dbt should be populated with the name you want t use for new database
4. the whole post installation should be done with sys logon.
